The women from rural Haryana bring us this beautifully crafted expression piece, made from repurposed fabric shreds. These miniature dolls echo a deep message of equality and solidarity. In their staunchly patriarchal community, a rural woman empowered, is a household transformed. In an eco-friendly nutshell, they symbolize a woman-man-environment nexus. Such is the story behind the creation of these dolls – always paired in unity and quadrupled in prosperity.
What started as a project for supplying specific overseas requirements, is today a bustling tailoring studio, employing women from rural and peri-urban communities. From fashionable clothing items to creative accessories – the studio now creates a wide range of products. The ladies started at meagre, bare-minimum income but have grown since, in skill and reputation, and are now capably contributing to their households.
With hopes in hand and curiosity in their eyes, they set out to a leading fashion and design school to be professionally trained in the art of making fabric bags. These bags were designed specifically for conferences and other formal events. The women learned a great deal about the kind of professional-grade equipment and techniques used for top quality bags. Most importantly, it boosted their confidence, and egged them on to innovate and experiment with various designs of their own. They have since improvised on their learning, and now make a medley of fabric bags for different occasions and purposes.
